For a street motor the electric pumps make me nervous.
The electric pumps maker should be able to tell you about it's use limits.

I ran an electric pump drive with cogged belt on a 453 cu.in. 440 engine
years ago, for track use they are ideal. You can leave the pump run in the 
pit getting the engine to a stable temp between rounds so you can get it
dialed in for consistency.

I charged the battery between rounds and would do what you are doing now.
A delco or smaller alt and I'd in a W.O.T cut out switch so it was not dragging
on the engine during a run, but would charge in the box and the return lane 
plus pits.

I know a few people who have shortened the mount area of the alternator itself if
the pulley lines up. ruins any warranty on the alternator though.
