Re: [AMC-list] Jeep XJ, on topic or off?

Might be borderline, but the dilemma you're in is on topic anyway - when to save and when to throw in the towel.

In your case it's a readily available daily driver. Meaning you can get a replacement fairly easy. If it were an AMC car it would be a different story. I'd weigh the cost of repairs against the cost of a reliable replacement. If the vehicle is otherwise reliable I'd fix the spot behind the steering box and drive it another year at least. Everything else (except maybe the e-brake handle) you may have to replace on a used replacement anyway. Normal wear items (tires and breaks) I never really consider much. As long as you think it will last through the tires or the replacement will be another Jeep you can use the tires on I wouldn't consider the cost of them much. Sounds to me like you can get a couple more years out of that Jeep.

Anyway, We've had this particular 97 XJ since Nov 04.
Year and a half ago I put full outer rockers in it.
Made 2/3rds of the inners myself.

While replacing a trak bar up front today I found cancer
between two of the Power steering box bolts. rot is clear through
the side wall, but not the steering box mount sleeves or the
inside rails.

Anyone have any insight of repairing this?
I know I can do it, but still am thinking on it whatI want to do.
At some point a winter driver loses the race...around here anyway.

We've got 6.5 years and over 45K out of it, do we stop or
fix it?

Needs rust repair at steering box
front pads and rotors.
one front knuckle area u-joint
e=brake handle assembly
two tires.
