I agree you can ripped off on a used or rebuilt engine where you don't know the 
history.  But I'm doing that right now (taking a chance, not getting ripped off 
I hope) with a 232 long block I bought from southern California.  For $400 I 
didn't pass it up although when I saw the ad, I thought it was a 258.   I met 
the guy and bought it anyway.  It's a factory rebuild that the Dad had bought 
for the son's Jeep years ago and it had sat in their garage waitng for "someday" 
to install it.  Well, the Dad died and the son was cleaning out the garage for 
his mom.  I don't know who rebuilt it but I pulled the pan, checked the bearings 
and now just about have it built up for my Gremlin project.  I have to sell one 
car then I can bring the Gremlin out of storage and finish the project.

I have another 232 (machine work all done) that may go in another Rambler 
project if I get tired of messing with 196s.  I just hope I can maintain my 
health and sanity until I retire in a year or so.  Then I plan to finally start 
moving some projects along.

I was looking at Atlanta Craigslist and saw a freshly rebuilt 232 long
block for sale. Meet the owner at the SC border, load the pallet, off
you go. Then I wandered over to the Jalopy Journal and read about
machine shop stories. Wrong parts, poor rebuilds, good machine shop
work but the engine rebuilder did not pay attention to tolerances, ...
So - I'm thinking I'll keep that 195.6. I'll let it burn a little oil
on startup. I'll run it up the highway to warm it up completely. But
I'll stay away from rebuilt engines on a pallet, cash and carry, lots
a luck your gonna need it deals.
