[AMC-list] Out and About Today

Well I got the exhaust system installed on the 65 Rambler today.  I go to a
discount tire and muffler place here in town to get tires changed, flats fixed,
and now for muffler work on my hobby cars.  The place actually sells used tires
which is very unusual in our litigous(sp?) society.   The young Mexican guy that
did the exhaust work was very patient.   I had cut the exhaust pipe and riight
after the point at which is crosses the rear axle to make room for the Mustang
fuel tank.   The installer had a challenge fitting a muffler in-line since there
was no room next to the fuel tank, like in the original installation.   He did a
good job and managed to fit a small muffler below the emergency brake bellcrank
assembly.  He left one joint there with a clamp so I can drop the exhaust when
and if I need to do maintenance on the e-brake etc.   All the other joints are
welded.   The tail pipe passes between the rear spring and the chassis and out
the driver's side behind the rear wheel.  There is not a lot of clearance there
but it appears to be adequate.  I have new leaft springs too, so that probably
helps.

Since I now have a new exhaust I put a few miles on the car.  I have not had it
above 40 yet but I may take it on the freeway later this afternoon.   I was
amazed at how it leans in the turns, but the ride is smooth.   You reallly have
to crank that steering wheel to make a turn too.   I had not driven a Rambler in
years and completely forgot the ergonomics involved.
