Re: [AMC-list] AMC's & Freon

A product called "Enviro-Safe" is the same thing as R-12a -- basically a mixture of butane and propane. Propane is a better refrigerant but doesn't carry oil well, so butane (which does carry oil) is added. Something like a 60/40 blend.
Don't get upset about using a flammable gas in the AC system. There is only about half a propane torch bottle's worth in there, and you have to have a red hot piece of metal or an open flame to ignite it. Some states have outlawed it because it's flammable... the idiots! You should be more worried about the 12-20 gallons of flammable liquid under the car that's under 20-50 psi of pressure (EFI systems) that will catch on fire and/or explode MUCH easier than a little propane/butane mix!! I suspect DuPont had something to do with getting it outlawed -- if cheap propane is widely known to work and accepted how could they sell proprietary R-134a?

I've used Enviro-Safe and it worked as good or better than R-134a, same experience as Bruce. I can't say if it works better than Freeze-12 or not. I've never mixed it with another refrigerant either, but since products like Freeze-12 are blends, there's no reason it shouldn't work. Bruce has done it, so it's obviously not going to hurt anything. I decided to give Freeze-12 a go this time and am happy with it. I had charged my system with Envrio-Safe myself.

I've used this product for over 20 years with great success and not a single
failure,,,

I've installed it fresh and dropped in in right over R12. Works MUCH better
than the 134 CRAP!

We make all kinds of custom A/C hose at the Carquest where I work. We have a
portable tool and are able to make hoses on site for industrial equipment.
Might want to check with some of your local parts store about hoses. If they
don't make em they can probably tell you who does.
