The reason I got my '73 J4000 was because the PO had the line melt off on the exhaust manifold and it emptied the motor of oil before he even smelled the leak! It came to a screaming halt in a bus stop and was towed away (I got it from the tow yard auction for abandoned vehicles)

Over the years I think every plastic line failed. Usually making a horrendous mess. Never did any engine damage though. 
   Mine is electric now. Though I do trust the mechanicals slightly more
