Over the years I think every plastic line failed. Usually making a horrendous mess. Never did any engine damage though. 
   Mine is electric now. Though I do trust the mechanicals slightly more

Yeah, mine cracked under the dash -- nice mess! Has a soft copper line now. Just be careful about running it through the firewall -- use a rubber grommet! The copper can vibrate against a metal edge and wear through to. The plastic line in mine split, didn't wear a hole through. It was 5-6 years old. Never had a copper line fail, but I always have a small loop in it near the sender so it can easily give without strain -- did that with the plastic line too.

Dave. I hope you go with no plastic tubing. I've seen way to much of that crap fail!
