Now that's an interesting experience. The old Superior slotted chrome wheels
on the Javelin had a way wrong offset to them. That caused me a ton of
trouble in fender clearance. Now with the new Ansen wheels and Fierce tires
(rear 255/45R17), and the correct offset, problems went away. It's amazing
what finding the correct knowledgeable guy to get wheels from can do for
your car. Now I have so much front end room in the fenders and suspension
brackets that I think I could lower the front nearly three inches and still
have plenty of room. Front wheel/tire is (235/40R17). Maybe you have the
wrong offset wheels. Set too far to the outside. Rolling the fender lips
helps too. I don't know if I would do that but......
Anyway you look at, my experience is never to lessen the suspension travel,
unless the car will be a track car only, and then the thing to do would be
install droop limiters. Constant bottoming out and hammering against the
stops over bumps only causes damage elsewhere in the car, the suspension is
hindered by insufficient jounce travel and cannot do the job it was designed
to do.

Depending on wheel tires sizing you may want to actually shorten wheel
travel. Not lengthen it. Mine would stuff the tire to far up in the wheel
well and on a tight turn the tread would grab the fender.
   I bought some long 2 or 3 inch poly stops. They stopped that. The loss of
wheel travel is not noticeable. To me anyway. Our roads suck too!
   I run 40 year old Rogue V8 springs 1 5/8" drop plates and 205/60/15
tires. I used the old springs on purpose as my American is a 6.

The only cautions I can add to this is that by lowering the ride height
using shorter springs and blocks, as described here, will result in less
suspension travel. The rubber suspension stops can be moved to restore the
travel, although not without some effort. It's probably not a big problem in
SoCal where there aren't many bumps in the road, but here in MN potholes are
prevalent.
Re-align the front suspension and steering immediately after lowering.
