Re: [AMC-list] Overdrive Solenoid Again

Somethings not right Joe. The solenoid pushes in and pulls out a locking pawl, which is nothing bit a solid piece of metal -- a big rectangular plunger. When the solenoid is activated it pushes the pawl in, when it's deactivated it pulls the pawl out. If the solenoid shaft doesn't lock in the pawl it can't pull out. Try pushing a screwdriver in the solenoid shaft hole while turning the transmission input shaft. You should be able to feel it slide in. I suspect that the pawl is in and might be stuck in the "OD in" position. That would allow the unactivated solenoid to slide all the way in without twisting the shaft. The pawl could be sticking in just far enough that the solenoid shaft won't touch it but not far enough in to lock OD in. In that case you might be able to bend a slight hook on a piece of stiff wire and pull it back. The pawl shouldn't be a tight fit, but with no or little oil on it it may be just tight enough to stay in position when pushed. That's what I suspect has happened.

I resinstalled the solenoid today and at first I could not turn it 1/4 turn CCW to reingage the plunger. Then I turned the input shaft on the tranny and shifted through several gears (The tranny is out of the car.) and the overdrive solenoid went back into the tranny but I did not need to turn it to engage it with whatever is down there. I can lift it directly out of the housing not without turning it which leads me to believe that the plunger is not engaged with whatever it is supposed to activate. Is something broken, or did I do something wrong? Joe Fulton
