The early style has a nipple for a vent tube and the later one does not. 
Also, I think the size of the opening is different as well. In any case, 
if you use the early cap on a later car, you'll know it since you'll 
create a vacuum in the gas tank. I have no idea when this happened since 
the parts book doesn't list the body number for this change.
