Is it an automatic transmission, and if so is the "kick-down cable" connected? If it's not, DO NOT drive the car!! That's a TV cable that doubles as a kick-down. If it isn't connected or is frozen the transmission isn't developing full pressure inside and it's slipping. If the cable is connected disconnect it at the throttle linkage and make sure you can pull/push it in and out easily by holding the end between two fingers. If you can't it's too stiff. Check that and if that is the problem I can tell you what to do next. Just tell me if it's stiff or not connected. 

If you have a manual transmission or the cable checks out, you obviously have another problem.

66 rambler with a 232 why does it take so long to get it up to road  
speed? It take about a mile to get it there.
