Re: [AMC-list] 1 bbl vs 2bbl

Where do you live Thomas? Do you get many days below freezing? If not, you should be fine without the heater. I live in central South Carolina. We get maybe 1-2 weeks total of sub freezing weather, and not in succession -- 2-3 days here and there from December through February. My J-10 doesn't have the heater, I have a Clifford manifold with a heat tube added underneath that helps some. It just takes 5-10 minutes of driving to fully warm up and be real responsive. If you can live with that, and it can be hard once spoiled by EFI, you'll be okay without the heater. The heater does have a big draw, but you should be able to run it for no longer than it's needed -- five minutes at the most. The real problem is switching it on and off. A simple toggle switch will work until you forget and leave it on too long. Then it will drain the battery, maybe even while you're driving if the alternator is the standard unit. For five minutes with the engine running it will run off the battery
and alternator together. It may pull more than the alternator is putting in, but five minutes won't hurt. It would be best to have some simple timer circuit that will cut off after five minutes and not reactivate until the switch is cycled off then on again -- even if power is dropped (car is cut off). Tom or someone else on here might be enough of an electronics guru to figure that one out, I can't! As for the 10 hp -- you will probably not notice it much. What you will notice is that it holds speed up hills a little better and has a little more passing power. You're not likely to notice it taking off though.

My 64 classic has a 1 bbl carb with the original cast intake. I'm in the middle of replacing it with an '80 Spirit 2 bbl aluminum intake. (Same one I asked about a week or two ago off of ebay)
1. Does it matter what end the coolant flows into and out of the manifold at? (I can't imagine why, but thought I'd ask just in case)
2. I think somebody (maybe Tom J.)said that I could not use the electric heater under the intake manifold cause my alternator couldn't handle it. Am I wrong, or did somebody say that?
3. I'm expecting slightly better gas mileage and a little more horsepower, (think I read about 10 more HP) but will I even notice the difference in either?
One might say that I should of asked number 3 BEFORE I bought this, but it really doesn't matter, I'd of done it anyways. LoL. Mainly cause I wanted to learn how and I like to tinker.

BTW, I successfully replaced my points ignition with the Duraspark system and WOW, it starts MUCH easier than before. Now I gotta see how it does during the winter.
