The 68 Rebel is a 290 2bbl, but the trans may not be original. It has a column shift that was removed. I think it's an aluminum case (I'll know better when I drop it out) There were 4 little lines on the valvebody, and the M11 had only 2. I still have a pile of driveshafts from rigs I parted, including Jtrucks.
The Postal Jeep had a replacement engine with the larger bell pattern. The motor has the 9XX trans from the '80 Eagle I parted out with a Jeep NP208. (My son has to sell his project now because they won't let him take it across the border)

i thought he said 290... 290-2bbl would be m40; 290-4bbl, m11 ['68
tsm]. i vaguely believe they use different bells.
" That would have an aluminum case. If the postal Jeep has an iron
" cased transmission it is an M-11, otherwise it's an M-4x. They are
" similar, but the iron case is of course a lot stronger.
a few sources [incl. wikipedia] all id the dj5 trannies as m35 '70-4
and m11 '73-4, with a 232. from '75 they're all tf904 with various
engines.
" The 290 uses the same bell as the 232 IF the 232 is 1972 or later.
except -- i've heard that amgeneral continued small-bell production
into the '70s after amc/jeep switched. dunno if it's true. jim -
what've you got?
