The VIN number is really irrelevant, and a VIN higher than the number produced is common. VINs were assigned as cars were ordered, not produced. It's very likely that some of those orders were canceled and the number not reused.

mine was vin# 172 and the show car [from nj] was also a low-ish
number, in the 260s iirc, so maybe they didn't figure out they should
be loaded until later.  he'd added a lot of ambo stuff in restoring
it, but it was much like mine initially.

we all know there were only 2545 made, but wasn't the first one tagged
vin# 10?  i vaguely recall a fight over who had the real #10, as one
of the pre-production cars was also tagged #10.
