Hello,
I also watch the values all the time. I am the national register for the
71-74 Javelin AMX Registry. I talk with people and see a bunch of
cars/pictures on a monthly basis.

If it is a real 73 AMX and it's a PC 401 that's a pretty rare car. Like
maybe 15 exist that are documented. There may be another 10 out there
that are not documented. If you want to send me the VIN I can bump it
against the registry and see if the car has ever been registered before.


Make sure of a few things:
1)	The VIN should start with A3M798Z for a factory 73 4 speed AMX,
not some other kind of tranny and engine
2)	Watch for 797Z which would be a fake AMX that should really be a
Javelin
3)	Make sure the car has the flapper box on top of the air cleaner
4)	Make sure the cowl induction is real (look at the back screen
and also for the circle inside the hood framework
5)	Should also have 3:54 posi rear end
6) 	Substantiate the PC interior. Take a look at Eddie Stakes site
for the color codes and trim codes.
7) You didn't say if the car has factory a/c. 

I would offer the guy $3500-$4000 and I would NOT try to start it. Look
it over maybe but unless you see visible damage to the block or the
heads are missing, engine fire, tons of oil leaks etc (obvious bad
signs) it's probably good to go or good for a rebuild. An unknown engine
needs a compression check anyway. Once the engine is running and the guy
thinks he can drive it the price goes way up. If you get it for less
than $3K you've done well.

So there I was driving around in my Gremlin when what did I see?

A Pinto! Looking not too bad neither. Told the driver that what we
needed was

I had two, that I was "supposed to pay for" :)
64 American, 440, twinstick.
63 Classic, 770, two door sedan, aluminum six, auto.

I spent my money on parts and "other things".
Dad never saw his money for those two till we sold them :-O

The Mustang I had to pay for.
It had a V8 and dad would not spring for it :-)

love to have a garager with those two ramblers and the Mustang sitting
it....
Right after I sold the Mustang I picked up a totaled 70 Torino that had
a 69 428 CJ engine swapped in it.
Sure would have been nice to put that combo together and keep it...

I don't write the list much but monitor it daily.  I just came across a
73
AMX sitting in a neighborhood driveway.  I inquired about it and they
said
the owner would probably sell it so I am waiting on a return call.
Apparently it was garaged up to about 2 years ago and has been sitting
outside since then.  It was fairly dirty but would clean up very well.
Looks like the paint (original F3 Plum but is black now) is several
years
old and has a couple of areas that appear to have bubbling under the
paint
about the size of a dime but nothing major.  The interior is in nice
used
condition.  Now the good stuff.  It is a 401 with the Cardin interior.
It
has the console with Hurst 4spd along with the Rally guages.  The entire
cowl induction appears to be present as well.  The motor hasn't been
cranked
in two years but was driven to where it sits today.  I feel that I can
wash
it up and have a nice driver.  It won't win any AMO metals but looks
very
nice at 10 feet.

I'll probably have to make an offer and I am really not sure of the
value of
this car.  I think I can get it very reasonable but I don't want to
insult
the owner.  I think cleaned up and running it would be fairly
desirable.  Unfortunately I don't have pictures of the car to show you
guys.  Any thoughts on the value of this car?

One of my Jeep J-10s has a T-176 four speed (1983 model), the other has 
a three speed (1975 -- I suppose a T-15A). Will one of the Ford 
three-speed +OD (fourth gear is OD) transmissions bolt to either bell 
housing? What about a Ford five speed (or some other model)? I was 
looking at tires and gear ratios, and I realized I might be better off 
using the lower gearset I have (3.54) and using an OD trans with a 
28-29" tire instead of using a large diameter tire to keep highway rpm 
reasonable (no more than 2500 @ 70 mph is the goal), yet still have good

pulling power at low speeds. I know the 3+OD has a big jump between 3rd 
and OD (dad had one years ago), but OD would only be used for interstate

driving without a load anyway. I won't do much long distance driving 
with the truck, but would like to be able to nonetheless.

Hopefully not, but I have heard similar said about driveway dust
catchers!

Sounds like a sweet driveable, fun car!  
Not to clean, not to beat.
Just right for cruising with a little tire smoke thrown in for fun!
