i don't think they needed to.  they've been notorious for the money
they've spent in other series - i heard $1.5 -billion- per year in f1.
if someone told me toyota spent more on their nascar program than gm,
ford, and mopar combined i would not be surprised.

speed costs money - how fast do you want to spend?  they have very
deep pockets and have amply demonstrated they're willing to spend
faster than everyone else.
