Dave, I've always been told that the cast iron block head will fit the AL engine, but it's too narrow on the rights side and some metal must be added to the side of the head to seal. Are you saying that the bolt pattern is wider spaced than the iron block side to side, or just that the block has a different shape on the top and the iron block head gasket won't seal? I've had at least one person tell me they used a cast iron block head, but they may have been mistaken. If the bolts are 1/2" further apart I'd say they were! I'll take your word for all this since you have both engines there and have at least one of them apart in front of you. That beats what someone "thinks" any day! Try a 50/50 mix of acetone and auto trans fluid (any type will do -- the cheap stuff!) in the cylinders. That's supposed to be better than any penetrating oil you can buy. I've used straight trans fluid and a trans fluid/diesel oil mix (about 50/50) before with good results -- much better than with motor oil. Used trans fluid even seems to work well. ----------- Date: Sat, 14 Mar 2009 20:04:08 -0700 (PDT) From: d stohler <das24rules@xxxxxxxxx> Subject: [Amc-list] aluminum 196 To: amc-list@xxxxxxxxxxxx Message-ID: <330395.94075.qm@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii well, last weekend i got another 62 classic. this one is 4 door. 15,000 miles on the odo, last tagged in 73. aluminum 196/t96od. going to be putting the t96od in casper. hopefully the motor will be ok and i can put it in my 63 440H. as long as the oil pump/filter dont interfere. i think they will. motor is stuck. gotten 4 cyls freed up, and gotten it to move about 3/4". front 2 cyl still pretty tight and keeping it from moving much. just a little tiny bit each day. havent had much time to mess with it this week. an hour or 2 each night. found out the c.i. head gasket will NOT work with the al motor at all. the distance from the head bolts on the left side to the cyl are over 1/2" wider, along with a lot wider on the right side. i thought maybe i could use some of that right stuff to seal the right side around the pushrods, but nope, wont even come close. so, on the look for a headgasket for the al block now. -- Frank Swygert Publisher, "American Motors Cars" Magazine (AMC) For all AMC enthusiasts http://farna.home.att.net/AMC.html (free download available!) _______________________________________________ Amc-list mailing list Amc-list@xxxxxxxxxxxx http://splatter.wps.com/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/amc-list
