I forget which you have.

A Ford may or may not have the aluminum bearing retainer, AMC definitely does/did.

If you don't know for sure it is a steel sleeved retainer you could have the T/O hanging on a worn place on the sleeve.

Not a a super easy repair, but not too difficult, much cheaper than a new clutch too.

Next I would disconnect the clutch rod from the T/O arm and put the linkage through it's paces.

If you still haven't found it, then I would drop the trans and go in for a look see.

Oh, yeah, one more thing to look at.
When depressing the clutch pedal, does the brake pedal move or wobble?
The pivot bushings for the clutch/Brake pedals could be worn out also.
