If it's a points ignition, especially one with high-performance points, 
it could be simply worn out. It seems like not a lot of force, but the 
shaft upper bushing wears out, as it doesn't get much lube in those 
designs, and it's been what, 30+ years?!

Points ignition energy severely rolls off starting at 4000, and if 
timing and dwell are jittering due to shaft wobble and play, that alone 
could do it.

With the rotor off, there should be no manually detectable side to side 
play in the shaft. The mech. advance unit might wobble. A full 100%Q 
distributor teardown would be a good winter project.
