Re: [Amc-list] packing for shipping

I have shipped several doors and fenders via Greyhound in the last couple of years. I usually try to find a box that fits and have the box banded by the guys on our loading dock at work. There's an auto body parts warehouse near my home that often has large boxes near their dumpster but I always as permission before I take any boxes.

I then drop the packages off at the local Greyhound terminal and then email the recipient with the Greyhound tracking number. Greyhound has lost a couple of packages but only for a couple of days when the packages didn't make the correct bus transfer. Occasionally when I could not make or find a box that fits, I have wrapped the fender in bubble wrap using lots of tape and they have been delivered undamaged.

DHL is on my fecal roster now. They charged by an oversize package fee for a large package I sent to Texas. They did not warn me about this fee when I got the shipping estimate using their online calculator. They later rescinded that fee, but I had to complain to a customer service agent and send documentation to back up my claim.

Fedex ground has absolutely destroyed two packages (one a very fragile dashboard) but they did pay both claims after the recipients cooperated and shipped the packages back to their inspection center.

I will not ship to Canada any more except for small items that can go via US.Mail. When using UPS the packages go through a customs broker and that has caused problems. The UPS agent I used here in California did not know what he was doing and I had one package returned to me twice for the proper paperwork.
