Re: [Amc-list] ramblings of a twisted mind and Head grooving (Ranger axle in American)

O may have been thinking about the earlier 58-63 American -- someone sent me an article that I printed a few issues ago on swapping in the S-10 axle in and it was a near perfect fit, will have to check on the year of the vehicle now!

I ran stock size tires on my first Rambler because an old tire store had them back in 79. 6.50x 15. Won't do that again! The road was damp and I almost missed a turn, was only going 30 or so because I was looking for the road signs. Turned the wheel, hit the brakes, and continued going straight. No more skinnies for me! I'm sure the old bias ply tires didn't have the grip of modern radials, and were probably a bit hard with age, but I don't drive on anything under a 195 (7.68") anymore, and prefer at least a 205 (8.07").

That skinny tire would make a nice "space saver" spare though. I could put that on a skinny Weld Draglite and not have to change two tires if I get a flat on the back. The Jag axle uses a 5x4.75" pattern, my Jeep space saver is of course 5x4.5". The Draglite wheels are what I run now, and have both patterns in them. They make a 3" and 4" wheel for drag cars that would be perfect. The standard skinny tire would still be a bit better than the average space saver donut and the aluminum wheels weigh a lot less than standard steel wheels.

S-10 two wheel drive rear is 54" Wheel mount surface to WMS.
Pre 93 Ranger 2wd is 56.5" WMS to WMS.

It makes the Ranger a perfect width. S-10 is actually too narrow!

I've just been playing around and 165/80/15 tires are just about the same as a E78-14" in overall size.
I have two 15x4" stude wheels allready, two more would give me perfect skinny driver wheels and tires.
