I thought I'd try a cheap Harbor Freight model when they were on sale for $49.95 a couple years ago. Nothing fancy, just a one liner that gives you the code number and will reset the light/erase codes. Works like a champ, couldn't be more pleased! They sell for $59.95 now, but I'd go with the $129.95 model if I were planning on using it a lot. With the cheap one you have to look up the code in a booklet (provided, along with a CD for even more codes). The more expensive one has the generic codes stored inside and will display the code number and description.
Do make sure anything you get is also CAN (Controller Area Network) capable as that's what most of the newest cars use. Even the cheapy I bought has that! I've used it on a Camaro, Daewoo, Vibe, Chevy trucks, a Ford truck, a Volvo 960, and a Jeep. Only that one code (something about the air bag system) had to be looked up on the CD-ROM which comes with it and has all the manufacturer specific info up to when the CD was produced (2-3 years ago). I think there's an address to order an updated CD, don't recall now (or really care too much...).
Now, a word on codes. There are generic codes for OBDII that all manufacturers have to use. Those are the most common ones. I don't know how many, but there are a lot! The manufacturers can add to the common list though. I've only run across one that wasn't in the booklet, and that was for my dad's 2001 Cadillac Deville, which has all the bells and whistles and a more sophisticated ECU than the average car.

I'm in the market for a scan tool. I haven't decided on going the
laptop/software/adapter route, or the all in one handheld style, and
am looking for comments/suggestions from anybody out there who owns
one. What you like, what you hate, that sort of thing.
I'm leaning towards the lap top type solution, because (at least in
theory) it would be easier to update to new model cars are required....
