Vintage Aire's catalog talks about the power various compressors use. It's been a long time since I looked for it but from what I recall, the York/Tecumseh ones are the worst (25+ HP and they also vibrate a lot) and the Sanden are the best (5-6 HP, about like a power steering pump). The Fridgidaire units GM used are a little worse than the Sanden (one is better than the other but I don't recall if it's the radial or axial pump) but they did not recommend replacing one of those with a Sanden type since the difference is pretty small. In any case, what you need depends on what you car has already. If you have power steering, you just need the compressor mounting brackets (there may be a brace as well). If you don't have power steering, you'll also need the idler and crank pulleys. You'll also need a battery tray from a V8 or A/C equipped and a new positive battery cable car since the battery switches sides to make room for the compressor. When looking for brackets, you need to do some research. The intake manifold changed several times and each change usually resulted in new brackets. If you feel the power is marginal now you'll notice the difference, but if you're happy with the power you have I doubt you'll notice -- maybe on take-off, but you can get a vacuum switch that cuts the compressor out under load. My 97 Volvo 960 had such a switch. It's a normally open switch with a vacuum diaphragm on it. When the engine is producing lots of vacuum (at idle or cruise) the switch is closed, but when vacuum drops below around 10" it opens and cuts power to the compressor. > > -------------- > Date: Sun, 3 Aug 2008 07:16:27 -0700 > From: "Thomas Garner" <Tgarner@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx> > > Did the 64 Classic with 232 engine have A/C as an option?
