I used to run nothing but mechanicals too, till I had to do engine work and got frustrated with the cap tubes on the temp gauge and the oil line on the pressure guage.
  Now I run name brand, read that as cost too d**n much, guages...
Yeah they are pricey, but the little sender is so much more convenient! 
I absolutely hate the plastic tube the oil pressure guages come with too, once had a wire overheat and melt a hole in one. Disscovered the problem as there was oil spraying on my foot as I drove! Good in a way as I fixed the short, but real messy!
