So which AMC product is the lightest?  I live in the South, so it would have to be something that could accommodate AC.

A few years ago, my pet to-be-done-in-the-future project was an AMC 150 & 5 speed from a 2WD Jeep, and put in the engine bay of my 79 Spirit.  However, now that I have a family, I suspect a Rambler American is probably about the same curb weight as a Spirit -- or less -- plus it could still accommodate my entire family.

I was surprised to see that the current Prius weighs so much: 2921 lbs!!!

So now I'm thinking... if you simply ditched the engine and drivetrain of the 60's, and stuck the Prius' stuff under the Rambler, the modern components would all told weigh less than the AMC six stuff, so you'd actually have a lighter car than the Prius, with somewhat worse aerodynamics -- which isn't a major factor at the speeds most of us drive.  **And**, you'd have a car you wouldn't feel cramped in.

Sigh.  So many harebrained ideas, so little time.

I think I'll just go buy that AMC 150/5spd setup that was advertised a while back.
