Type F is NOT the same as Dexron/Mercon III! It may work for awhile, but it's characteristics are different and slippage while occur! I asked Valvoline (NAPA's oil supplier) about why we carry both and I was told in '66, when Ford came out with the C6 trans, trans oil spec was changed to the same as Dexron (but they had to call it Mercon so people wouldn't know they were using Chevy fluid. Totally a marketing thing) C4 and FMX (BW related) trans continued using Type F.
   Using the Type F in powerglides was an old racer's trick to make them shift harder.

Dexron III is pretty much a universal auto trans fluid, and is spec'd to be a Type F substitute. In any case, it's perfect for all AMC auto trannys. Type F is the original spec fluid and is equally fine to run.
