You have to use the solenoid on the starter. You have a Delco (GM) starter. The fender mounted solenoids are for Autolite (Ford) style starters. 

You may as well take the starter to an auto electric shop and have it rebuilt when you pull it. I'm sure it will last a long time with just replacing the solenoid, but if you plan on keeping the car may as well have it rebuilt (or at least checked out good) while it's out.

  The starter solenoid on my 1965 American finally died yesterday.  Is there a way to convert to the later model, fender mounted solenoid without haing to pull the starter, or do I need to order the OEM style that is currently piggy back on the starter ?
