I would think hanging it in the air would be fine, but if your worried a crossmember with a simple layout and soft rubber mount would be fairly easy to build.
   With the original four point mount in place you could actually sandwich plate the crossmember to the floor as all you doing is taking some tress off the tail of the trans for piece of mind.
    Say acouple of 4X6" plates with nuts welded on, laid on top of the floor under the front seats, if there are no frame rail sections in the early american to run to. You could either tack weld the plates themselves to the floor or a couple of rivets to keep them in place.
     For mounts you can get anyone of a half dozen cheap mounts that will bolt to the T5.
