195s will clear easily, they are about the same size as the factory optional "oversize" tire (6.95 x 15 -- 195 = 7.7"). I run a 205 on my 63 Classic, which has about the same clearances as the 64-65 American. I sized up a set of 235s my brother took off his 65 Mustang, and would not be comfortable running them. With the edges rolled on the rear fenders I still wouldn't have but about 1/4" of clearance on the outside, even on the front. Not enough if you hit a pot hole while turning. I plan on getting 215s when I need tires next, maybe next spring. 205 = 8.1", 215= 8.5" (rounded to the nearest 0.1"). A 235 is 9.3" (9.252"). 

Just divide the width in millimeters by 25.4 to get inches. To figure the sidewall height, multiply the width in mm by the "series" number with a decimal in front of it. A 195/78 has a sidewall height of 195 x .78 = 152.1 mm (6"), a 205/70 like I run 205 x .70 = 5.7". I said sidewall height, but that's really the total height of the tire from the rim to the center of the tread -- the tread bulges just a bit from the edge of the sidewall. I checked it on my car to make sure I'm correct! Total diameter is wheel size plus sidewall height x 2, on mine it's 15 + (5.7 x 2) = 26.4".

  Thanks for the reply, I thought that it was a later model American...I am running 195 78 14
  on my 65 w/a set of 14x7 Cragar Smoothies, and like yours,  there is only  about 3/4 inch clearance between the tire and inner frnder well lip...I was initially worries about rubbing but am hoping for the best...It is only th first day that they have been on the car...
