There's a sweet spot in many disciplines, such as
cars. Dual-circuit brakes; lap belts; safety glass; power
steering that works with the engine off. None of that stuff
interferes with operation of the car, some of it enhances
reliability with no increase in complexity (eg. dual circuit
brakes).

Past some point safety junk interferes, and after that, it
becomes bizarre.

How many lives do side-curtain airbags save? 100, 1000, 10000
per year? No one wants to say "this is a good place to stop
in our safety/cost/complexity calculation" so "more" becomes
the answer.

It's not so simply putting a price tag on a life, which is the
common response to "enough already!". Because we're not buying
individual, nameable lives, we're buying statistical margins
in insurance company tables.

Brake upgrades, seat belts, safety glass, yes! Nearly all AMCs
have all that stuff. Luckily not a lot more :-)
