Eddie; many people who see the article about your
buddy James will say that he got what he deserved,
that he shouldn't have resisted, that he yadda, yadda,
yadda.
I know there are two sides to every story, the
police/press and the truth. You knew him better than
anyone else involved, probably, and you certainly knew
him better than me. 
My condolences for a friend gone......Russ
