The difference is the number of cars on the road and the idiots driving them.
Plain and simple.
I know that even a simple thing as buckling a seat belt will change the end result.
I have had friends killed in side impacts that would likely survive with side airbags.
That being said, none of my DD's have the side bags.
A lot of it is hype as if you drive defensively you can avoid most any accident.
There's always that one idiot that's going to get you...

After what I did to myself on a bicycle, hell, I look at lot of stuff differently now :]

As for pickups, ever see anyone fall out of the back of one?
I've seen it twice, once it was an A--hole that deserved to fall out. He only spent a couple of weeks in the hospital with brain swelling and six or so months in rehab learning to do stuff all over again. Never was the same.
Second guy was sitting in the bed plain and simple. Wrong place, wrong time, panic move, out he went, not as "lucky" as the first guy. DOA...Massive head trauma.
