That's true Andrew! I read in some AMC pub (can't recall if factory or not) that the production numbers never justified full production of the engine in the US. AMC had signed a deal to buy all the tooling and such for the engine, and bought a plant in Indiana (I think -- going from memory -- it was later sold to Duetz to build small diesel engines) just to produce it. 

I'm thinking that the baby Porsche taking off saved AMC some $$$ -- they could back out of the deal and VW wouldn't lose any money because of it!

as i heard it, audi was giving the engine line up and going with vw
mills, so vw/audi thought it'd be surplus to their needs.  the 924
wasn't really supposed to happen!  when it did, they obviously
couldn't let go of it as they thought; this may be the reason amc
dropped it.
