You might be correct Andrew, that the 258/serp setup uses a shorter nose crank than the v-belt setup. A standard v-belt balancer will pull up, and you can also install a short hub balancer on a long crankshaft -- it requires a 0.30" thick washer that fits inside the balancer hub. That's what I have on my 4.6L stroker to push the 4.0L balancer up on a 74 258 crank.

i've heard repeatedly that 258 serp belt cranks have the same short
nose as the 4.0 crank.  otoh i think you're right that the balancer
would work.  going the other way is the hard one!
