" Unfortunatly none of the off the shelf oils you can buy at walmart or
" most any auto parts store has very much zink in it. The EPA (our
" Government) Mandated the new levels of zink in all Modern oils. This
" is why the high zink oils such as Valvoline racing oil has right on
" the bottle "Not Street Legal" Because it is not EPA compliant to be
" used in todays cars. Remember the Government and certain green
" activists want to get rid of the Car hobby.
i'm not sure the govt cares, except insofar as green activists affect
politician's careers - but green activists can be dangerous. a little
knowledge is a dangerous thing... the california epa's own study
showed that poorly maintained newer cars emitted more pollution than
all old/hobbyist cars and trucks put together, and the federal epa's
study concluded the greenest way to recycle an old car was... as a
car! no landfill waste, no new-car resource consumption, manufacturing
pollution or waste.

" " What is "low Zinc" oil on the shelf? Look for the circle with the "API
" " Certified for gasoline engines" in it. This is a LOW ZINC oil and should
" " be used in roller engines only (according to the Shell Engineer). Low
" " Zinc oil will be approx 600- 800 or less, some MUCH less.
"
" you forgot to mention what the api cert should be! most oil today is
" api cert 'sm' and that's the low zinc stuff. 'si' and earlier [like
" the walmart 'sf'] is the high stuff. for diesel oil, 'ci' is high,
" 'cj' lower.

this is the oil i was thinking of. anything rated earlier than si
should have zinc level of 1200-1300 ppm - that's part of the spec.

" But you don't have to spend a lot of money to protect your car! Go to
" Wal-Mart and you'll find "Accell" brand oil that's still labeled API
" SF. That's an old rating! It specifically states "formulated for 88
" and older cars" on the label. It should have higher zinc
" concentrations in it, but I haven't seen any test results. Current
" API rating is SM -- SL and earlier should have adequate zinc levels,
" so the SF should be great. It's under $2 a quart.
