Well, that sucks.
Don't you have anuthern?
I know you want to "save it" but for $200 I'd be peeking in there to see what is what!
For the amount of mile syou puton your cars, I'd spend the $200 if a new one can be found.
However, if not then I'd figure out a way to take that peening off as it sounds like it is a thin edge and could lead to cracks and fractures.
  Perhaps a lathe and carefully true the edge off? I realy don't have firm grasp on how best to do it.
I'd expect once that sharp edge is flattened or whatever it will last for a very long time yet.
  I know the trans in my first 64 was reported to be original and untouched at 232,000 miles!
