the tab mounting holes are slotted, at least on americans, and when
it's loose it tends to slide back when the door is closed, which given
the placement of the door hinges just makes it close tighter and jam
the latch.

my solution was to slide the tab out and lock down the screws.  that
was 10 years ago.
