AMC team,
I just went through the seat track re-build on both my 71 Jav AMXs. Each
of the cars had the tracks with the 4 swedged studs welded to the track.
In the 71-74 seats, you have to be careful that the stud doesn't spin
around when you are trying to tighten it or worse, that the stud threads
have been damaged or shortened. Be careful that you put the little wires
back as they help pull the seats back and forth when you are adjusting
the position.

I thought the cap screw set-up was 69 and older.

I looked at a set of 69 Javelin seats today and a set of 70 Javelin
seats I have. The methods of fastening to the floor appear to be
identical. Cap screws in front bolt holes and studs on the rear
flanges.

That may have changed later. I do seem to remember that my 73 Javelin
had studs at all floorboard holes but I could be wrong.

I'm looking for two things listed below. If you have suggestions please
let me know...thanks.

1. Wood grained steering wheel for 69 AMX
2. Wood grained center dash piece (has AC) for 69 AMX.

It's not a perfect world or at least a cheap one.

I finally started measuring clearances on the used
.060 oversize engine block today and found that, even
with a new .060 oversize piston in #1 cylinder the
piston skirt to bore clearance was excessive. The
manual says .0006 to .0017 is acceptable. I was
measuring at least .004 Two other cylinders were
comparable so I consulted with the machinist and he
said bring him another block. I had asked him to try
to save this block by just honing it and that's what
they did. I have a great set of .060 oversize pistons
I want to reuse, hence the request to try to save the
block.

No joy. I have another .040 oversize block which I
will take to the machine shop on Monday. It pays to
have spare parts lying around. More expense, but at
least I know the engine will be closer to being
correct.

My oldest son and I replaced the master cylinder and bled the brakes
today. We now have brakes!!! The car actually stops and everything! We
have some work to do to make it go, but now we know it will stop. Cool.

Hope to do the coolant and replace the radiator hoses tomorrow. Maybe
change the oil, change the fuel filter and the fan belt. The car should
be in decent shape when we get the gas tank back from Marietta Radiator.
I'm hoping to try starting it by the end of the week.

Joe,

Can't the 196's take stupid big over bores? I though you could get up to

.125" over sized pistons for them.

Good news on the brakes. Make sure to change the oil and filter before
starting the motor and it wouldn't hurt to change it again after a
little bit of running.

It would be a good idea to prime the oiling system before you start it.
You can do that by yanking the distributor, cutting the handle off of a
big flat head screw driver, chucking that in a drill, and using a drill
to drive the oil pump. Once you see oil at the rocker shaft (you should
be able to see it through the oil fill cap), you're done.

After you drain the coolant, it would be a good idea to just fill it
with distilled water for the initial start up. That way, if you end up
having problems that require the cooling to be drained, you're just
draining water. You will also need to open the water heater valve to get

all of the air out of the system but I recommend opening it at the valve

instead of trying the control. The reason is that it the valve is
frozen, you'll bend the control cable. A lawn mower shop can replace the

cable core if that happens.

Hopefully, you'll find no leaks or other problems that would make you
need to change the coolant. If that's the case, I'd flush it out really
well before refilling with coolant.

One other cooling system tip: Stay away from Triden brand hose clamps.
They used to be good but turned crappy about 10 years ago (that's when
they started making them overseas). You can still get good stainless
steel clamps made in either the US or Canada. When I buy them, I go to
one of the two regional chains near my house (these are the places the
repair shops go to for parts) and I can get the good ones for the same
price or less than the crappy ones.

Matt,

I have a good set of .060 oversize pistons (five are
low mileage and one is brand new) so I thought I would
get another block bored from .040 to .060 oversize to
keep the cost down. Thankfully, I have two more of
these engines so I have that option. I don't want to
have to buy new pistons. This was supposed to be a
cheap rebuild. (fat chance).

So what does sleeving cost? Are stock-bore pistons easier to
find and is there any cost offset because of that?

Well, I want to keep the cost down somewhat and I just
assumed that getting another block tanked and bored
would be the cheapest alternative. I'll save this
block for awhile. If anyone needs a block and can
find oversize pistons bigger than .060 over, they can
have the block.
