Have to chime in here.  The 290 was gross rated hp and the 360 was net hp
after accessories.  They changed the ratings aroung 70-71.  My stock 304
was rated at 150hp in whereas my stock 67 290 was rated at 200hp.  The
304's were rated at 210 hp at one point.  The 360 was rated at 160 which
was about equal to the gross hp ratings of the 2V 343's.  Just my
thoughts here.  YMMV.  I will agree that the smog laws did take the guts
out the 74 and up engines.
