does the 196 have a dome piston in stock form?
I can't rememebr for sure but I think it does.
Anyway, if it does not one trick to freeing stuck rings with a hammer after repeated soakings is to cut a round chunk of maple or use an upside down piston to beat on.
   The idea is to completely cover the top of the stuck piston and spread the impact load. This can help to keep from breaking a ring land out of the stuck piston. 
Note: this does not ensure the ring itself won't break!
