Bruce, a medium sized vice-grip locking pliers will work. Lock the jaws on the spring near the loop at a slight angle so you can pull back and slip the spring in the hole or over the pin/ whichever it is.

Tossed in Popular Mechanics "Saturday Mechanic" as well. All fine and good reading - BUT - how do I grab hold of the loop on the end of the hold down spring, pull it through the corresponding hole in the drum, and hook it on to the retaining clip?
