Re: [Amc-list] Hold down spring yanker thing - huh?

Bruce,
There are specially made tools that really make that part of drum brake
systems rebuilding much easier. I'm not sure if those tools are even still
available new because so many if not all new cars come with discs front and
rear. Any way for what it's worth I have a New Britain (New Britain is gone
now) tool from the middle 70s that works great for pulling those pesky
springs and assembling the drum brake stuff. The tool works great for
disassembly too for that matter. It kind of looks like a large pliers with
specialty ends on it. That's about all the help I can give you except you
may be able to find a similar tool at NAPA or Car Quest or probably most
auto parts stores. Ask for a tool to work on drum brakes and any old parts
guy should know what you want. If it's a young dude that wants to look it up
on the computer you're probably screwed.

up Chilton's "Brakes, Steering and Suspension" book and read the
section on drum brakes. Tossed in Popular Mechanics "Saturday
Mechanic" as well. All fine and good reading - BUT - how do I grab hold
of the loop on the end of the hold down spring, pull it through the
corresponding hole in the drum, and hook it on to the retaining clip?

a screwdriver, but has a small hook on the end. Is that the ticket?

pieces and tools on hand (and I want to try it myself first). What's the
scoop?
