Get a crap screwdriver with a tip 1/8" or so wide, and file a notch right 
in the center of it. Then you just pass it through the spring from the shoe 
side, catch the center of the hook/loop, and press it in.

I made mine out of some 3/16" steel wire bent into a L shaped handle at the 
hand end, flattened the other with a hammer and filed a V_shaped notch.
