California cars started getting different equipment about that time. Let 
me pull the 71 TSM...
Okay, looks like all 71s w/V-8 and MANUAL TRANSMISSION had the "Air 
Guard" system, which is an air pump. The pump is connected to the 
exhaust manifolds and a valve cover through a special valve. If you have 
an auto trans car all you have is the PCV valve and charcoal cannister, 
unless it had a 304 from the factory. All California cars and all 304 
auto trans cars also used a TCS (Transmission Controlled Spark) system. 
Those four (Air Guard, PCV, Charcoal Cannister, and TCS) were the only 
emission systems used in 1971.

The early 70s is when emissions really started (68 or 69 for CA), and 
the systems grew in complexity every year through about 1979 or so. It's 
easy to get confused as to what was used when under what conditions, as 
you can see from the previous paragraph! The engine could have been 
changed, the air pump removed (common, especially if it came from a 
non-emissions state and the pump locked up), or it could even be a very 
early production car w/1970 emissions. I doubt it's early production, 
but look at the door tag at the bottom (unlabeled) number and see. If 
it's a low number, say under 1000, it could be an early car. That is the 
sequence the car actually came off the assembly line -- VIN numbers were 
assigned as the cars were ordered.

AMC team,
When I bought my car in 2005 I was told the only factory emissions that
came with the car was the charcoal cannister which the car has. In
looking at the 71 Tech Manual it appears there should be a lot more. 

Can someone give me a complete  list of all the "correct" emissions
equipment that were included on a 360 4BBL 4 speed car in 1971 ? The
most difficult thing to find would appear to be the log tubes that go on
the exhaust manifold. I really hate to try and run this stuff down now
but with a complete list I could go ahead and get started.
