Don't invert them, just try switching from side to side. Then you will at least have a forward outlet. Chevys work that way, and that trick has been used in tight clearance engine bays. I've seen a 283 stuffed in a 55 Rambler (like 58-60 American) with forward outlets used so the exhaust would clear the steering column.

OK, clarification.  I just checked and inverting the exhaust manifolds
won't work.  Bolt holes are not agreeable.  Don;t know where I got that
from but now I know.
