The main thing is to make sure you have oil in them. The synchros seized to the mainshaft of the one from my '83 J10 (still selling parts from that trans if anyone is interested. Haven't been online much lately due to my move).

I used Redline synthetic ATF in my WC T-5. 
Recommended by pro trans builder Bob Hanlon

I don't know what is recommended for the NWC, 
but so far (2 years) no problems at all with my WC T-5.
