Hold on. 
Shimming the rocker shaft moves it upward away from the pushrods. If I shim, and use my original pushrods I will have less preload (if that were possible).
 
I need another .030" of pushrod. It seams I will have to get the .080 longer pushrods, and shim up the rocker shaft .050 to get the right preload. In other words. The +.080 will cause the pushrod to press into the lifter too far. Loosening the rocker shaft retaining bolts say a 1/2 turn (about .050?) would lift the rocker shaft and allow the pushrods to raise up in the lifter while the rocker is still in contact with the valve. (This is all with round numbers, and assuming the angles of the rockers have little effect on adding and subtracting the lengths)
 
Is .080 preload a bad idea?
