Re: [Amc-list] classic shock options

Better shocks will help, but you really need stiffer springs. Those cars were sprung to absorb the punishment of a rough road without upsetting the passengers. Order a set of springs 10% stiffer and you'll notice that the car rides and handles MUCH better. Or try something cheap: either get the clamps that let you clamp one coil down (will lower 1/2"-1") or one of the rubber spacers that insert between a set of coils (not the drive in rubber biscuit looking things, what I'm talking about is a rubber circle, split so it can be inserted into a spring with the car jacked up, goes all the way around at least one coil). Those will stiffen the spring some, should be enough to notice. Nothing like a set of springs though! V-8 springs (Ambassador only for 62) will be to stiff. Standard cast iron six springs are 895/865 pounds per inch (left/right), heavy duty 930/895, and V-8 standard 1050 (both sides). 10% stiffer than stock would be 985/952 (rounded up to nearest pound), just a bi
t stiffer than the factory HD springs, which are roughly 4% stiffer than standard springs. I wouldn't go more than 10% stiffer, 7-8% might be a good rate.

would the valving for the rear be ok for front tho?
rear of those mustakes dont weigh as much as the front
end of a 62 6cyl classic or my 65 v8. i just wonder if
they would be ok, or would it still be really soft
like my stockers are??? my shocks are ok, im just real
tired of the soft "wallowing" of the shocks. want
somethin a little better valving.
