Have you tried going to the local parts store and getting a shorter alternator drive belt?  I am assuming that the reason you are so close to the oil filter is that dimensions of the single wire alternator version are larger than the stock alterntor so that when you pull the belt tight the outer case is pressing up against the oil filter.  If that is the case, a one or two inch short belt should do the trick.
