We could guess or theorize about this till the end of time...
Unless someone has actual hard facts that they are not sharing...
We will never really know!!!

To me it seems AMC did not really care to lock in a means to later prove what car was built as what.
If they had cared we would see serial numbers stamped into blocks and more thourough build codes etc;
